Ordering The Correct Size Dress

Choosing a size to order in your dress can be a challenging decision.  You don’t want a dress that will be too small or one that is too big and will cost you a lot of money to have altered. But whether you are purchasing a wedding dress, bridesmaid dress, or mother-of dress we are here to help talk you through your measurements and sizing. We always start by measuring your bust, waist and hips.  Most of the time this is a learning experience for many because people aren’t sure where to correctly measure their body.  So we like to measure you, just to be sure you are ordering the correct size based on your personal measurements.  Most people are also thrown off by bridal sizing because the size you are in the bridal world can be 2-3 sizes larger than what you wear in regular clothing. For instance, when you normally wear a size 6 in street clothes, it is not unusual to be measuring into a size 10 or 12 in bridal. It throws everyone off, but the important thing to remember is to look at that specific designer’s size chart and where your measurements are based on the designer’s sizing. Remember, it’s just a number and no one will know what size dress you are in but you.

Another concern among people ordering a bridal dress is when you are measuring into a different size than the size of the sample dress you tried on. The sample fit great so you are confused. Why wouldn’t you just order that size?  Well, most of our sample dresses have been tried on many times and by many different body types so they can be stretched out.  This is another reason we take your measurements. But keep in mind, you can order whatever size you want to. We are just here to help you make an informed decision based on your measurements and the designer’s size chart for the dress you are ordering.  An important note to remember is that the timeline for order a wedding dress is normally 6-7 months and for bridesmaid and mother-of dresses it is 3-4 months.  This is not including the time needed for alterations once your dress arrives in our store.

Your dress is here! Keep in mind that when your dress comes in, the chances of it fitting you perfectly are not likely. Many people think that it is custom made to your measurements but when we order dresses they are not. The dresses are made to mannequins, not your body so the size is based on specific measurements from the designer. When your dress comes in and it isn’t fitting the way the sample did or isn’t perfect that is absolutely okay! There is no need to worry because it is always easier to take a dress in than to let it out. Not everyone’s body is the same size in their bust, waist and hips so needing some kind of alterations is very common.

Again, it is always your decision what dress size you order.  We are here to help you make an informed decision. When in doubt, go with what the designer recommends for you. Even if that size seems big to you, remember bridal sizes run large and it’s just a size!

Happy wedding planning and feel free to stop by the shop anytime if you have sizing questions!
