The D.I.Y. Manicure

Are you recently sporting a new piece of jewelry on your left hand? J With the added attention it’s important that your hands are in tip top shape! This could mean a trip to the salon, but why pay the money when you could do it yourself at home? Here are a few easy steps for a DIY manicure that will have people not only oohing and awing at your ring, but your nails as well!

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water for a clean slate (if you’re already wearing nail polish take it off first, then wash your hands).
  2. Next, file and buff. Shape your nails the way you like them – square or rounded top. Buff them to get a nice smooth surface. And make sure to clip away any loose hangnails.
  3. Moisturize. Choose a lotion that will make your hands silky smooth… bonus if it smells good too!
  4. Start with a thin layer of top coat.
  5. Now the fun part: choosing a color! You can go classic and traditional with a French tip or neutral color, or try one of summers hottest trends, hot pink, sparkly gold, electric blue, bright purple/violet, orange, taupe, or lack (yes, it’s still in season!). Get creative and have fun! Nail polish is an accessory! Once you’ve chosen, paint two layers of your color. Brush it on in even strokes, down the middle and then on each side, and make sure not to paint it on too thick.
  6. Top it off with a layer of top coat for a nice glossy finish. Give yourself at least 30 minutes before you use your hands, to prevent nicks and smudges.

You’re all set to show off your new engagement ring… and your manicure!

One more tip: make it a girl’s night!

Call up your girlfriends and soon to be bridesmaids. You can paint each others’ nails while you tell them your engagement story! Maybe even pop in My Best Friend’s Wedding, 27 Dresses or The Wedding Planner… you know, to celebrate the occasion! :)

Have fun!
