Not Your Average Wedding Cake

buttery_shortbread_cookies1If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard someone talk about a wedding cake being dry or tasteless, I could have paid for my wedding.  I understand and wholly support the idea that wedding cakes are an art form. Shows like CakeBoss and Ace of Cakes have proven that with their gorgeous and structurally amazing cakes. They’re the centerpiece of the reception (apart from the happy couple, of course!) and because of the status given to these cakes, we’re willing to pay exorbitant amounts for them as well!  Time to call an end to the madness.

donut-cake4Many couples will freely say that they didn’t have a chance to eat any of their own cake, other than the bite they smush into each others’ faces. Well, whether you’re licking it off your face, serving it to your guests, or revisiting it on your first anniversary, you want it to be tasty, right?!

Okay, so let’s look at some cake alternatives! The Portland area has some incredibly creative bakers, caterers and food artists…..take advantage of them! The photos included with this post are courtesy of Voodoo Donuts, The Sweetpea Baking Company (a vegan option), Mezzaluna Fine Catering and Portland Truffle. My mouth is watering just looking at them!

portland-truffle2Going with a cake alternative not only makes your wedding unique, it also keeps wedding business local, and is competitively priced.  Many of these options cost only a couple of dollars per serving which is really comparable to a traditional wedding cake!

Once again, I’m not debating how beautiful a well-decorated wedding cake can be.  But let’s hear it for those who choose to go a unique and flavor-centric route.  If you’ve had an unusual “cake,” or if you’re a caterer who makes them, send me your pictures.  I would love to see your creativity, and hope to revisit this topic in the future with some testimonials from Oregon wedding dessert adventurers.

Happy tasting!

Corinne
