How to Include a Pregnant Bridesmaid

Here at Charlotte’s we often see brides who want to include an attendant who will be pregnant when the ceremony is scheduled.  There are many ways to include her, which will make her feel comfortable but won’t put the focus on her belly instead of you.

When choosing a dress there are a few styles of bridesmaid dresses that will flatter a growing tummy and will also look great on the rest of the bridal party.  Empire waist dresses in flowing fabrics, such as chiffon, look great on many body types.  A-line silhouettes with a higher waist line can also compliment the entire party, especially if the pregnant bridesmaid will be in her first or second trimester at wedding time.  You might also consider separates that will allow for a panel to be sewn into the skirt.  An important thing to remember is if the lining of the dress/skirt is fitted, it won’t accommodate a growing baby bump.

Many designers also have maternity styles in their lines or versions of dresses that are intended for a pregnant bridesmaid.  This is the same dress, just in a maternity style.  If you choose one of these designs, all of your attendants can still wear the same dress, keeping a unified look.  Or you could allow your bridesmaids to choose their own dresses and give your pregnant friend the option of one of these.

Lastly, if your bridesmaid is going to be late in her pregnancy at your wedding or just isn’t comfortable participating in the ceremony; you can invite her to be an honorary attendant and be on hand to take part in the photos.  Whatever dress you choose or how you include her, she’ll be grateful that you thought of her comfort and everyone will be happier and more able to enjoy your special day!
